I‘ve just come back from four days in Brisbane where I attended GenreCon, a conference for – you guessed it – genre writers! Held every two years, I’ve been to every event since it started and always have a great time. It gives me a chance to catch up with friends in the industry and learn while I do it. The line up this year included international guests Nalini Singh (NZ) and Delilah S. Dawson (US), and Aussie guests Garth Nix and Sean Williams among many others.

I was part of the programme, chairing a panel on what it’s like to write a series with amazing authors Nalini Singh,  Anne Gracie and C.A. Larmer, and I’m pretty sure we could’ve talked about it all day! I also undertook a writing workshop with Delilah S. Dawson (never stop learning!) and attended many of the panels which covered both the business and creative sides of writing. Then, of course, there’s all the ‘catch-ups’ in between with industry friends and meeting a whole new bunch too. The evening events are always great fun and on the Saturday night there was a ‘Mods and Monsters’ theme speakeasy. I found an awesome Zombie Prom Queen costume and I have to say, looking at some of the photos I even scared myself – I looked so horrible, but in a good way. Our group drew some stares at the karaoke bar afterward!

If you live in Australia and are interested in writing, whether it be in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thriller, Horror, Crime, Mystery, Romance, etc., I highly recommend this conference. Look out for it in 2019.
